I really like the idea of a small, modern G Wagon.

And if it looks like this, it's even better. I really dig the renders done by Mercedes-Fans.de, one of the better retro concepts I have seen. And the Evoque proved that there is still some potential left in the small SUV world for premium cars that have a characteristic look.

Meh, It looks a little to much like the Glk.

I also feel that it simply wouldn't sell to the same crowd as the Evoque. Oh yeah, and what would be inside that strange square on the back?

I can see a bit GLK at the rear and maybe in the size of the car in general, but not much for the rest. It is always the same problem with cars: As soon as you target a certain segment things will look more or less similar.

All in all, it looks like a shrunk and tamed version of the Ener-G-Force Concept

Of ideas..

The freelance videos would pay for it, eventually, while you drive closed course, professionally. At speed. The director's running the camera.

Yeah, the biggest concern would be differentiating the Glk and that render from each other, they appear to be in the same general class. Sort of like the Acura Tl, and Tlx where they are similar and seemingly competing with each other.

Still, that tire bump on the rear gate confuses me, because a tire could not really fit inside of there.

We need more body on frame SUVs... I am not a fan of any of the German crossovers right now but I wouldn't mind a Wrangler-sized Mercedes off roader.

The front is perfect, the back is barf!

Personally I think the current G-Class fulfills the "distinctive-looking" SUV class and a replacement would be need to be thought out incredibly well. Sure a new one would be more comfortable, but I think the one above is too tame. I know that most G owners won't be taking it to the Sahara and back anytime soon, but I like the idea of such a capable, classic looking vehicle on the market.

Full Disclosure: I'd like to think one day I could own (a new) one, and it would be glorious.

The proposed small, boxy SUV would never replace the G-class - it would be a far softer Evoque competitor, probably even GLA based. It is supposed to be in planning as of now and only needs the okay from the board members.

The G-Class is too valuable from a marketing standpoint to loose. Also, Mercedes sells a ton of them to the military, and still makes profit on all the road going G-Classes because the development costs are so low (if you consider the cars 30 year lifespan). It will keep on rolling and be updated which is good - a G55 would totally be a dreamcar of mine. Ridiculous, but so cool.

Whoops, thanks for explaining it to me, again, haha.. I had it all mixed up in my head.

I would be distraught if the G-Wagen was canceled.

What the heck is that? I know it's a Mercedes M class, but that's all I know about it.

What I was getting at is why does it have the camera attached to it?

Made by Pursuit Systems; for commercial film-making. At speed. And roomy for isolating the director from the not-to-be-distracted stunt driver.

I don't know how to put this into the right words, but couldn't they make a system similar to what is used on hook and ladder trucks, where the camera has steering controls as well as the car?

The system's designed to go a whole car-width other into the lanes and precision driving is required (highway speed, at tailgating distance) so as to avoid bashing the equipment or wrecking. It requires a Hollywood Stig, it's a two-person job at minimum. It's just a stunt you never see.

Filmography directors don't necessarily drive. There are exceptions.
